Fundamentals of Toxicology

An asynchronous elearning course for OEHS professionals of all levels

This introductory-level course, narrated by experts in the fields of toxicology and occupational health and safety, reviews toxicology fundamentals through the lens of occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) and includes examples and a detailed, interactive case study to expand on course concepts.

This project was developed in Articulate Storyline.

Each of the four modules began with an objectives page and an introduction to the presenter for the module.

Graphics

Complex concepts are broken down into more relatable pieces of information through graphics and interactive slides.

Interactive Animations

Animated graphics further explained complicated scientific concepts. In these examples, the learner controls each step of the animation, allowing greater processing time and accessibility.

While all of these examples were fully narrated in the course, only the first two videos contain narration.

Quick Checks

A variety of styles of questions were used to check the learners’ understanding throughout the course. All questions allowed multiple attempts and provided immediate feedback, this allowed questions to be challenging without being punishing and informative no matter if the learner got the question right or wrong.

Real World Case Study

The final module of the course contained an interactive scenario activity based on a real-world case study. This activity puts the learners in the shoes of an emergency response toxicologist. Through the five levels of the activity, the learner discovers what the job of a toxicologist in the field entails, and why is it is important to collect reliable and repeatable data before making key decisions.

Feedback from the user experience test

“Thank you for breaking this out in a way that makes it stunningly easy to understand. This is something I know a lot of my pure safety schoolmates struggled with.”

Feedback from the user experience test

“The case study module was challenging in a good way because it forced you to use your judgement but also use a solid foundation of evidence to support your recommendations, which is not necessarily something that I get a lot of practice doing elsewhere.”

Feedback from the user experience test

“Even though toxicology isn't my strongest subject, the course made it easy to follow and learn from.”
