Welding: a Case Study in Occupational Hygiene

An asynchronous elearning course for professionals of all levels working in welding or related fields

This course describes common welding, cutting, and hot work processes and the health and safety hazards associated with them. Adapted from a popular in-person professional development course filmed in 2012, this self-paced online course incorporates videos, interactive scenarios, and practice questions throughout to help deepen learner understanding of these complex processes.

This course was developed with Articulate Storyline. Videos were edited using Adobe Premiere.

This course combines footage and audio from a recorded in-person presentation with real video and images of welding practices and interactions and practice question to keep learners engaged.

What is Welding?

This segment of the introductory lesson mimics the style of the rest of the course materials: a mix of audio narration and text-based information, video clips edited from the original presentation, and interactive graphics.

Interactions

Welding Industry Infographic

This infographic explores key statistics about the welding industry.

Click-to-Explore

Learners explore an real-world image of welding in the field and select highlighted regions to identify where there may be a fire or explosion hazard.

Explore the Space

In this activity learners pan around a room by looking through different images of a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) storage space. The presenter, in newly recorded audio, highlights the key elements of the space and encourages learners to think about how they could implement this in their workplaces.

Case Study

Monitoring Inside or Outside?

This set of slides explores actual research conducted by the presenter to determine whether it is better to monitor for welding fume inside or outside of the welding helmet. It uses a mix of narrated slides, interactive diagrams, video explanations, and charts and data to illustrate his point.
